Actually a few big things are coming, and small things. The Ron Mueck exhibition is coming to the Modern! It has previously been at the Brooklyn Museum and the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa (they have a nice exhibition site here) and opens here June 24. The show runs through October 21, so there will be plenty of time to see it over and over.
His work has always fascinated me. Of course, the incredible level of detail in his sculptures is astonishing, but the way he manages to make the viewer aware of themselves is so intriguing. His sculptures are always set in an abnormal scale, either larger than life or much smaller than life. Standing in front of one of his sculptures always makes me immediately aware of my size and the space around me. I also love the sense of ambiguity of his work. There is little there describing the context of each work, allowing the viewer to develop their own narrative for the figure depicted.
It is exciting to know a whole exhibition of his work is coming and to be able to see so many works together. There will be lots more in the coming months about this show so stay tuned. In the meantime, take a look at the Brooklyn Museum's Flickr set of the installation of the show there.
