A powerful, harrowing and ultimately inspirational story of six months in 1961 that changed America forever. From May until November 1961, more than 400 black and white Americans risked their lives—and many endured savage beatings and imprisonment—for simply traveling together on buses and trains as they journeyed through the Deep South. Deliberately violating Jim Crow laws, the Freedom Riders met with bitter racism and mob violence along the way, sorely testing their belief in nonviolent activism.

The Modern Art Museum will present the U.S. premiere of the Smithsonian Channel documentary Freud’s Naked Truths. For most of his career Lucian Freud was overlooked —a man out of step with his time. However, his extraordinary portraits— of children, lovers, gangsters, supermodels, even the Queen of England — pushed boundaries of the genre. This intimate film explores his life story and remarkable body of work with those who knew him best – his models, children, lovers, and friends. The film will premiere on Smithsonian Channel in July.

In this engaging and colorful documentary, Charles Atlas explores the life and times of artist/designer/performer/provocateur and Freud muse, Leigh Bowery. Bowery designed costumes and performed with the enfante terrible of British dance Michael Clark. He famously created one of a kind outrageous costumes for himself and ran, Taboo, one of the most dazzling night clubs in 1980s London. The film includes interviews with Damien Hirst, Bella Freud, Cerith Wyn Evans, Boy George, and his widow Nicola Bowery.
