The Modern maintains one of the foremost collections of modern and contemporary international art in the central United States. Various movements, themes, and styles are represented, including Abstract Expressionism, Color Field painting, Pop art, and Minimalism, as well as aspects of New Image Painting from the 1970s and beyond, recent developments in abstraction and figurative sculpture, and contemporary movements in photography, video, and digital imagery.

Thirteen themed haunted houses across America make up the imagery for Misty Keasler’s Haunt, 2015–2017. A driving force behind this series, which depicts interior rooms and exterior scenes, is that the subject matter takes photography to the edge of where it fails as a medium.  “Photographs,” Keasler explains, “are often used to document an experience, yet the experience of walking through a haunted house is completely lost in each of the still images.

In this special program designed for people within the Deaf community, participants experience works of art at the Modern through intimate conversation with specially-trained docents and student-ASL interpreters. Offered the fourth Tuesday of each month, with limited space for participants at 10 am, each program lasts 90 minutes and includes a gallery activity. Please make reservations at least a week in advance by calling 817.840.2118. This free program includes admission to the galleries and all materials.

The Graduate Student Lecture Program provides the opportunity to hear area graduate students in art and art history discuss works on view at the Modern. These dynamic 30-minute gallery talks are the result of in-depth research and the students’ original analysis in order to offer insight into a selected group of artworks connected by theme. Each public talk is offered twice to allow for multiple opportunities to attend.
