American Winter – 2013, NR, 90 minutes. This documentary feature film follows the personal stories of families struggling in the aftermath of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. Filmed over the course of one winter in one American city, the film presents an intimate snapshot of the state of the nation's economy as it is playing out in millions of American families, and highlights the human consequences of the decline of the middle class and the fracturing of the American Dream.
Two sessions of this free program are offered, one for ages 5 to 8 and one for ages 9 to 12. Each session is led by an artist who takes participants through informal drawing exercises in relation to works in the Modern’s galleries. Children under the age of six must be accompanied by an adult during the program. Bring a sketchbook and pencils. Attendance is limited, so early arrival is encouraged. A sign-up sheet is located at the information desk.
Learn with local artists as they lead informal basic drawing classes in the galleries. This free class is open to adults at all skill levels—just bring a sketchbook and pencils. Registration is not required, but participants should sign in at the information desk.
Docents are also available to conduct private tours in Spanish, French, German, Mandarin, and American Sign Language when reservations are made at least two weeks in advance.
This program for families with young children is led by a docent and includes a gallery project designed by the Modern’s education department. Both the tour and project focus on selected works on view in the galleries. Registration is not required, but attendance is limited. A sign-up sheet is provided at the information desk the day of the program. Admission and supplies are free.

September 23—Mark Thistlethwaite, Kay and Velma Kimbell Chair of Art History at TCU, directs a panel discussion with the Modern’s Chief Curator Michael Auping, organizer of the exhibition Urban Theater: New York Art in the 1980s, along with Curator Andrea Karnes and Assistant Curator Alison Hearst, who also contributed essays to the catalogue.
In the Moment at the Modern: A Program for People with Memory Loss
This special program is designed for people with memory loss and their caregivers. Participants experience works of art at the Modern through intimate conversations with docents and thoughtful projects designed by the Museum’s education staff. Two sessions are offered the fourth Wednesday of each month, with space for up to 20 participants at both 10 am and 2 pm. This free program includes admission to the galleries and all materials.
