August 12–14

Friday 6 and 8 pm; Saturday 5 pm; Sunday noon, 2 pm, and 4 pm
“Stunningly beautiful. I don’t know how you can put more into a film, or make one that’s more deeply moving.” Stuart Klawans, The Nation. For his new film, master director Patricio Guzmán, famed for his political documentaries, travels 10,000 feet above sea level to the driest place on earth, in Chile’s Atacama Desert, where atop the mountains astronomers from all over the world gather to observe the stars. The sky is so translucent that it allows them to see right to the boundaries of the universe.

LIFE ABOVE ALL
August 19–21

Friday 6 and 8 pm; Saturday 5 pm; Sunday noon, 2 pm, and 4 pm
“Alone among the films here [Cannes], this was the one that had critics cheering like school kids in a ten-minute standing ovation, and wiping tears from their gimlet eyes.” Mary Corliss, Time. Life Above All is an emotional and universal drama about a young girl (a stunning debut performance by actress Khomotso Manyaka) who fights the fear and shame that have poisoned her community. The film captures the enduring strength of loyalty and a courage powered by the heart. Directed by South African filmmaker Oliver Schmitz, it is based on the award-winning novel Chanda’s Secrets.
PG-13, for mature thematic material and some sexual content; 105 minutes; Sotho, with English subtitles

BUCK
August 26–28

Friday 6 and 8 pm; Saturday 5 pm; Sunday noon, 2 pm, and 4 pm
“In some sense it was beauty that saved Mr. Brannaman, that of his conscience and that of horses, which, having been tied to humans long ago, became companions, workers, and for some, as this lovely movie shows, saviors.” Manohla Dargis, New York Times. Buck Brannaman is a true American cowboy and sage on horseback who travels the country for nine grueling months a year helping horses with people problems.

HIGHER GROUND
September 9–11

Friday 6 and 8 pm; Saturday 5 pm; Sunday noon, 2 pm, and 4 pm
A triumph at Sundance 2011, Vera Farmiga’s directorial debut, Higher Ground, depicts the landscape of a tight-knit spiritual community thrown off-kilter when one of their own begins to question her faith. Inspired by screenwriter Carolyn S. Briggs’s memoir, This Dark World, the film tells the story of a thoughtful woman’s struggles with belief, love, and trust—in both human relationships and her relationship with God.
