THE ILLUSIONIST
March 11–13
Friday 6 and 8 pm, Saturday 5 pm, Sunday noon, 2 pm, and 4 pm
“Although more wistful than the hyperenergetic Triplets, The Illusionist is equally comic. (As in Tati or Triplets, there is far more noise than dialogue.) No less impressive than Chomet’s character animation is his sense of timing. For its 80 minutes, the movie creates the illusion that not just Tati but his form of cerebral slapstick lives.” J. Hoberman, Village Voice.
Directed by Sylvain Chomet and based on a short sketch of a script by the legendary Jacques Tati, The Illusionist details the story of a dying breed of stage entertainer forced to compete with emerging rock stars.
PG for thematic elements and smoking
80 minutes; French, with English subtitles
THE WAY BACK
March 18–20
Friday 6 and 8:30 pm, Saturday 5 pm, Sunday 11:30 am, 2 pm, and 4:30 pm
“No one will go away disappointed or indifferent. It’s a movie that sticks with you like Elmer’s glue.” Rex Reed, New York Observer.
Directed by six-time Academy Award nominee Peter Weir, The Way Back is an epic story of survival, solidarity, and indomitable human will.
PG; 132 minutes
NORA’S WILL
March 25–27
Friday 6 and 8 pm, Saturday 5 pm, Sunday 2 pm, and 4 pm, No noon show time
“Another film about a family meal, Nora’s Will is a fascinating glimpse into a Mexican-Jewish community and a nicely told, more-than-slightly twisted fable of love.” James Verniere, Boston Herald.
93 minutes; Spanish
OF GODS AND MEN
April 1–3
Friday 6 and 8:15 pm, Saturday 5 pm, Sunday 11:45 am, 2 pm, and 4:15 pm
France’s official selection for the 83rd Academy Award for best foreign language film and winner of the Grand Prix 2010 Cannes Film Festival, Of Gods and Men recounts the story of eight French, Christian monks living in harmony with their Muslim brothers in a monastery perched in the mountains of North Africa in the 1990s. When a crew of foreign workers is massacred by an Islamic fundamentalist group, fear sweeps through the region. Despite the growing instability, the monks slowly realize that they have no choice but to stay, come what may. This film is loosely based on the life of the Cistercian monks of Tibhirine in Algeria, from 1993 until their kidnapping in 1996.
R for a scene of graphic violence
120 minutes; Arabic/French, with English subtitles
