September 27
Gretchen Diebenkorn Grant

Gretchen Diebenkorn Grant, daughter of Richard Diebenkorn, shares her insights and thoughts on the life and art of her father on the occasion of Richard Diebenkorn: The Ocean Park Series, the most comprehensive show to date of Diebenkorn’s celebrated works. Having grown up through her father’s Albuquerque, Urbana and Berkeley periods, his turn to representational landscapes, still lifes, and his late Matisse-like figurative paintings, Diebenkorn Grant was in her early twenties when her parents moved to Santa Monica, where Diebenkorn accepted a teaching position at UCLA and shortly thereafter began his signature Ocean Park works. Such insight was invaluable to exhibition curator Sarah Bancroft who thanked Gretchen Diebenkorn Grant in her catalogue acknowledgements for graciously submitting to “a lengthy interview, indulging my questions and humoring my blind spots as I came to better understand the artist and his work.”
