Adult Two-Day Workshop: David Bates
This workshop spans two days, back-to-back, and focuses on the special exhibition David Bates. A distinguished local artist discusses Bates’s work with the class and leads participants in specially designed studio projects using mixed media. The first day focuses on drawing and painting, and the second day focuses on sculpture and assemblage. All materials are provided. Registration is required—enroll early; space is limited.
Conceptual artist Rirkrit Tiravanija (pronounced Rick-rit Tee-rah-vah-nit), born in 1961 in Buenos Aires, Argentina, grew up living between Thailand, Ethiopia, and Canada as the son of a Thai diplomat. His grandmother played an important role in his life. She taught cooking on Thai television and owned a restaurant in Bangkok, where Tiravanija spent time as a youth. This background influenced the artist’s work, which often involves cooking in art-related places, such as museums and galleries.
Two sessions of this free program for children are offered, one for ages 5 to 8 and one for ages 9 to 12. Each session is led by an artist who takes participants through informal drawing exercises that relate to works in the Modern’s galleries. Children under the age of six must be accompanied by an adult during the program. Bring a sketchbook and pencils. Attendance is limited; early arrival is encouraged. A sign-up sheet is located at the information desk.
