Film Schedule

SOUL POWER
August 28–30

“Most everyone remembers The Rumble in the Jungle, the 1974 heavyweight championship fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in Kinshasa, Zaire, but who remembers Zaire 74, the music festival that was organized to go along with it? Soul Power, a vibrant and joyous new documentary, should end that anonymity.” Kenneth Turan, The Los Angeles Times.
PG-13 for some thematic elements and brief strong language; 93 minutes

TULPAN
September 4–6

“A tender, unforgettable comedy about a vanishing way of life.” Tamara Straus, The San Francisco Chronicle. Following his Russian naval service, young dreamer, Asa returns to his sister’s nomadic brood on the desolate Hunger Steppe to begin a hardscrabble career as a shepherd. But before he can tend a flock of his own, Asa must win the hand of the only eligible bachelorette for miles—his alluringly mysterious neighbor Tulpan.
100 minutes; Kazach and Russian with English subtitles

LORNA’S SILENCE
September 11–13

Sokol and Lorna, two Albanian emigrants in Belgium, dream of leaving their dreary jobs to set up a snack bar.
R for brief sexuality/nudity, and language; 105 minutes, French/ Albanian

IT MIGHT GET LOUD
September 18–20

This documentary traces the importance of the electric guitar from the point of view of three significant rock musicians: the Edge, Jimmy Page and Jack White.
PG for mild thematic elements, brief language and smoking; 97 minutes

HERB AND DOROTHY
September 25–27

“Motivated entirely by a love for art of a particularly severe and sophisticated type, the Vogels were never interested in the financial rewards that collecting could bring. Interviews with artists whom they collected testify to their sharp eye and good spirits, while the Vogels themselves, sitting in their same old apartment, overflowing as ever, make for charming company.” Nathan Lee, The New York Times. Herb and Dorothy Vogel redefine what it means to be an art collector in Megumi Sasaki’s charming documentary.
89 minutes
