FILM SCHEDULE
MID-AUGUST LUNCH
“Had Mid-August Lunch wavered from its matter-of-fact realism, it might have toppled into sentimentality or morbidity. Instead it is a group portrait of people who are comfortable with who they are, savoring the pleasures of food and companionship and living in the moment. The movie glows.” Stephen Holden, The New York Times. A middle-aged man living in Rome with his imposing and demanding elderly mother has a change of fortune when opportunity knocks on his door in the most unexpected way.
THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO
“This is not a deep psychological study. But it’s a sober, grown-up film. It has action, but not the hyperkinetic activity that passes for action in too many American movies. It has sex, but not eroticism. Its male lead is brave and capable, but not macho. Its female lead is sexy in the abstract, perhaps, but not seductive or alluring. This is a movie about characters who have more important things to do than be characters in an action thriller.” Roger Ebert, The Chicago Sun Times. This powerful Swedish thriller is based on Stieg Larsson’s best-selling novel about a journalist and a young female hacker who unravel the truth about a missing person.
MICMACS
A David-and-Goliath tale, Micmacs is the story of a man and his friends who come up with an intricate plan to destroy two big weapons manufacturers.
WOMEN WITHOUT MEN
Shirin Neshat’s adaptation of Shahrnush Parsipur’s realist novel chronicles the intertwining lives of four Iranian women during the summer of 1953; a cataclysmic moment in Iranian history when an American-led, British-backed coup d’état brought down the democratically elected Prime Minister, Mohammad Mossadegh, and reinstalled the Shah to power.
COCO CHANEL AND IGOR STRAVINSKY
Set in 1920s France, this film by Jan Kounen chronicles the passionate affair of two of the twentieth century’s most iconic figures.
R, for some strong sexuality and nudity; 120 minutes; French, with English subtitles
CITY OF YOUR FINAL DESTINATION
“James Ivory’s first solo venture after the death of his longtime producing partner Ismail Merchant reads like a loving salute to 49 years of Merchant Ivory filmmaking, from 1965’s Shakespeare Wallah to this gentle, witty tale of a young Iranian-American academic seeking permission to write the authorized biography of a Uruguayan novelist.” Deborah Young, The Hollywood Reporter. The film features Anthony Hopkins and Laura Linney.
