TUESDAY EVENINGS AT THE MODERN

These lectures are held in the Modern’s auditorium and begin at 7 pm. The Tuesday Evenings series brings artists, scholars, and critics to discuss their work each week during the spring and fall. The fall series begins September 7 and ends November 16. Admission is free and open to the public. Free admission tickets can be picked up at the Modern’s admission desk beginning at 5 pm on the day of the lecture. Seating begins at 6:30 pm and is limited to the first 250 ticketholders. A live broadcast of the lecture will be shown in Café Modern for any additional guests. The Museum galleries and Café Modern will remain open until 7 pm on Tuesdays during the series, (regular gallery admission charge applies).

Dr. Michael Corris, a member of the Conceptual art group Art & Language and a founding editor of The Fox and Red-Herring, is an artist, art historian, and writer on art. Corris’s writings on contemporary art have been widely published in international journals and magazines including Art Monthly, Artforum, Art History, art+text and he is an editor of Transmission Annual. Also recognized for his thorough and thoughtful coverage of the artist Ad Reinhardt in the 2008 book by the same name, Corris’s most recent publication is a book he wrote with John Dixon Hunt and David Lomas on the use of language in art, Art, Word, and Image: 2000 Years of Visual/Textual Interaction, published in 2010. Each author contributed their take on the topic of art, word and image in individual essays with Corris’s interpretation serving as the subject of this Tuesday Evenings presentation, NO FREE READING: Interpreting Contemporary Art, Word and Image, drawing examples from the past ten years with some detours to the 1960s.
At 5 pm preceding this presentation, Corris will be available for a book signing of Art, Word, and Image 2000: Years of Visual/Textual Interaction in the Museum lobby.
