Since the beginning of her career in the mid-1980s, Lorna Simpson has been well known for her conceptual photographs and videos. Simpson’s work continually challenges historical and preconceived views of racial and sexual identity. FOCUS: Lorna Simpson will be the first museum exhibition to feature the artist’s large-scale acrylic, ink, and silkscreened paintings.

Academy Award nominee Benedict Cumberbatch (BBC’s Sherlock, The Imitation Game, Frankenstein at the National Theatre) takes on the title role of Shakespeare’s great tragedy.

Directed by Lyndsey Turner (Posh, Chimerica) and produced by Sonia Friedman Productions, National Theatre Live will broadcast this eagerly awaited production live to cinemas.

A Series Conversation takes as its mission the investigation and celebration of series within individual artists’ oeuvres. Each hour-long session probes a specific series within an artist’s solo exhibition on view at the Modern, inviting conversation, reflection, and connections.

Everyday is a Holiday (NR, 2015, 60 minutes) — Growing up, filmmaker Theresa Loong knew that her father, Paul Loong, was older than most of her friends' parents. Father and daughter are almost 50 years apart in age. Throughout her youth and young adulthood, Theresa recalls a cheerful father who loved to laugh and play pranks on his kids. But underneath all that laughter, he would show occasional flashes of anger and sadness. One day young Theresa asked him innocently about a curious scar on his back. "Everyone has secrets," he would say.

Oil & Water (NR, 2014, 60 minutes) — Oil & Water is the story of two boys coming of age in the middle of one of the world's worst toxic disasters: the contamination of Ecuador's Amazon region by reckless oil drilling. Hugo comes to America to fight for the survival of his Amazonian tribe, while David goes to Ecuador to launch the world's first company to certify oil as 'fair trade.' Their journeys lead them to explore what could be a more just future for people around the world born with oil beneath their feet.
