CLEAN SLATE, 2018 by KAWS

Director Marla Price is pleased to announce the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth’s acquisition of a monumental bronze sculpture by KAWS. The work will be on view to the public beginning December 9, 2018. 

In CLEAN SLATE, 2018, the central figure strides forward, embracing smaller, childlike figures in each arm, a gesture recognizable to anyone who has found themselves in the company of two tired toddlers. Featuring KAWS’s iconic COMPANION characters, the bronze sculpture stands 21 feet tall and overlooks the museum pond.

Two sessions of this free program are offered, one for ages 5 to 8 and one for ages 9 to 12. Each session is led by an artist who takes participants through informal drawing exercises in relation to works in the Modern’s galleries. Children under the age of 6 must be accompanied by an adult during the program. Bring a sketchbook and pencils. Attendance is limited, so early arrival is encouraged. A sign-up sheet is located at the information desk. 2-3:30 pm

Slow Art at the Modern

The aim of the Slow Art movement is to break with the often frenetic pace of modern life to simply enjoy works of art in a deliberate and unhurried fashion. Slow Art at the Modern invests in this pause with a 30-minute spotlight tour focusing on one work of art. Led by a Modern docent the third Friday of each month, Slow Art at the Modern begins at 5:30 pm.

Sounds Modern - Broken Dolls

Sounds Modern presents "Broken Dolls," a concert exploring the dangerous rhythms of feminine identity, agency, and domesticity in American life. Like Laurie Simmons' photographs, the works on this concert explore dizzyingly impossible perspectives and scenarios that show humor and darkness of seemingly harmless, commonplace elements. Presented in conjunction with Laurie Simmons, Big Camera/Little Camera. Admission is free and open to the public.

Family Studio Workshop - KAWS Totems

Join us for some creative family time on the Modern’s lawn as we look across the reflecting pond to focus on the Museum’s new acquisition, KAWS’s monumental sculpture CLEAN SLATE, 2018. Learn about how KAWS and other artists have reclaimed toys and cartoon characters and given them new purpose and identities. Take this opportunity to start the spring with your own clean slate! Empty out your kids’ closets and work together to recycle old stuffed animals into art. Stick around and take a selfie with the resulting collaborative sculpture built by all participating families!
