Nick Kithas and Friends

Take advantage of live music in the Grand Lobby and enjoy music from Nick Kithas and Friends.

The first Friday of each month, the Modern and Café Modern team up to bring you live music and drink specials in the museum's Grand Lobby from 5 to 8 pm. Invite friends to enjoy unique cocktail selections, and the opportunity to dine at the Modern by night. Café Modern offers a full menu in the dining room and lighter fare in the Grand Lobby until 8 pm. A docent-led, 20-minute tour of the galleries is available at 6:30 pm.

Slow Art Day

The average person looks at a painting for 15 to 30 seconds, but on Slow Art Day, we urge visitors to join us for a series of guided discussions, each on single work of art. You may join any or all of these 30-minute conversations. We will look at signature works from the collection by artists such as Andy Warhol, Agnes Martin, Morris Louis, Anselm Kiefer, and others.

Gabriel Kahane, compose

8980: Book of Travelers is an attempt to rediscover and celebrate our collective humanity in the face of deep political and cultural divisions. The day after the 2016 presidential election, Gabriel Kahane set out on an 8,980-mile train trip around the continental United States with no phone or internet connection. The song cycle/monodrama that resulted etches a series of intimate character studies. Kahane is an American composer with a barrier-breaking career whose major label debut recording was deemed “one of the year’s very best albums” by Rolling Stone.

Science Fair

National Geographic Documentary Films' Science Fair follows nine high school students from around the globe as they navigate rivalries, setbacks and, of course, hormones, on their journey to compete at The International Science and Engineering Fair. As 1,700 of the smartest, quirkiest teens from 78 different countries face off, only one will be named Best in Fair.

Special Exhibition Tour

First Saturdays, 2 pm
Every day the Modern is open, a docent is on hand to show you their favorite highlights on view, discuss works you’re curious about, or point out details of the building you may never have noticed. For a narrower focus, join a tour that spotlights the special exhibition. These tours are free with gallery admission and start by the information desk in the Grand Lobby.

Graduate Gallery Talks

The Modern’s Graduate Student Lecture Program presents Graduate Gallery Talks, providing the opportunity to hear area graduate students in art and art history discuss works on view at the Modern. These dynamic 30-minute gallery talks are the result of in-depth research and the students’ original analysis, offering insight into a selected group of artworks connected by theme. Each public talk is offered twice to allow for multiple opportunities to attend.

Admission to the galleries is free for participants.
