Summer reading is not just for the kiddos this year. The Modern has a book club going on this summer in conjunction with the upcoming Kara Walker exhibit. I attended the preview night on June 12th where Terri Thornton, Curator of Education, gave a great talk on Kara Walker's background and some of the symbolism in Walker's art. Terri also discussed Walker's creative process and the influence of literature in her artwork.

If you missed the preview night, don't worry. The first reading for the book club will be Uncle Tom's Cabin by Harriet Beecher Stowe. You have plenty of time to read this old classic. The book club will meet on Thursday, July 17th at 7pm in the Modern Auditorium.

[Editor's note: The Podcast of the Terri's talk can be found on our podcast page under the Insights heading. Or here is a direct link to the enhanced podcast. Check back after each event for the podcast of the discussions.]
