"Denzel Washington's performance is a towering achievement."—Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
Spike Lee's epic biographical masterpiece chronicles the life of Malcolm X, from his early years to his transformation into one of the most influential voices in the fight for civil rights. Denzel Washington delivers an Oscar-nominated performance that captures Malcolm's complexity, charisma, and evolution. A sweeping, essential American story told with power and unflinching honesty. Co-starring Angela Bassett, Albert Hall, Al Freeman Jr., and Delroy Lindo.
Join LaShawnda Mayhorn and Dr. Marcellis Perkins for a post screening discussion about the film and its impact.
The Modern’s Exhibition Films series showcases the concept of “art in motion” through artist-created films, documentaries about artists, and films that explore themes related to our permanent collection and special exhibitions. At select screenings, attendees can engage in discussions and participate in Q&A sessions; all films are shown in the Museum’s auditorium. In conjunction with the exhibition Rashid Johnson: A Poem for Deep Thinkers, the Modern presents a film pairing that extends the exhibition’s exploration of Black identity, history, and cultural production beyond the gallery. The selected films span narrative and nonfiction forms yet share a focus on voice which echo key concepts in Johnson’s work—intellectual legacy, collective memory, resilience, and the tension between individual inner emotional lives and public persona.
The Fort Worth Film Club (FWFC) partnered in 2022 with the Reel House Foundation after the closing of Fort Worth’s lone art house theater, the Grand Berry Theater. Continuing what the Grand Berry started, FWFC's goal is to build a community in Fort Worth around a shared love of film. The Club hosts free monthly screenings, focusing on films with cultural and local importance. Screenings are open to the public and are followed by a moderated discussion.
