Raging Bull (Martin Scorsese, 1980) With a big leap in his career as the director of the Roger Corman-produced Boxcar Bertha (1972), Martin Scorsese polished his style and turned around to create his breakout film Mean Streets (1973) the following year. The film began a longtime collaboration between Scorsese and Robert De Niro that reached a pinnacle in the 1980 film Raging Bull. Following Jake LaMotta (Robert De Niro) as an Italian-American middleweight boxer suffering from neuroses that manifest in the destruction of the world around him, Scorsese created a defining film of the decade and gave De Niro his first Best Actor Academy Award after his third nomination.
