One of the most inspiring, dynamic and charismatic ensembles on the musical scene, the Atrium Quartet musicians have established themselves as performers of deep emotion, intellect, virtuosity and technical brilliance.  Highly acclaimed by audiences and press, the Quartet has performed throughout Europe, Russia, the USA, Australia, Japan and Brazil.

Founded in 2000 in St Petersburg under the inspiration of Professor Josef Levinson, the Quartet graduated from the St Petersburg Conservatoire in 2003.  It should be noted that Professor Levinson is the uncle of CMSFW Artistic Director, Gary Levinson.

This concert features String Quartet No. 12.  There are only two movements in this quartet.  Shostakovich was typically a very tonal composer, but in this quartet, he delves into atonal, twelve-tone techniques.   

Brahms wrote some 23 quartets, but discarded 20 of them and allowed only three to be published and performed.  This concert features String Quartet No. 1 in C minor. 

The quartet will also perform Beethoven's String Quartet No. 13 in B flat Major.  This was the last substantial piece of composition Beethoven completed before his death, and is unique in that it has six movements rather than the usual four.
