Robert Motherwell’s works were often inspired by music, poetry, and other media. Works of music that do this are often called “impure.” Sounds Modern’s Impure Music concert will celebrate Motherwell’s Pure Painting retrospective at the Modern with chamber music that explores threads connecting different practices, including a newly commissioned work by Erik Ulman directly inspired by paintings of Motherwell.
