Associate curator Alison Hearst, who organizes the museum’s FOCUS series highlighting contemporary artists, said Magid is asking questions about value, the economy and human life. ... Eerie, powerful and complex, threaded together, the show is “a poetic reflection on value,” Hearst said.
James Russell, “Powerful and Complex: Jill Magid Reflects on Labor and Value at the Modern,” Arts and Culture Texas, January 10, 2022
In conjunction with FOCUS: Jill Magid, the conceptual artist, writer, and filmmaker Jill Magid discusses her current cross-disciplinary project Tender, which explores the complex relationships between currency and human value. Tender began as an intervention into the US economy in 2020 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic and has continued to expand and take on new forms, from sculpture to film to installation. Through a close examination of each work within Tender, Magid addresses her overall process and the building of a new visual vocabulary around bodies and economies. Special attention will be placed on the new works Labor Days and Bodega Flowers created specifically for Magid’s exhibition at the Modern.
