Slow Art Tour

The idea of "slow art" has its origins in the "slow food" movement centered on the deliberate enjoyment and appreciation of food that began in Italy in the late 1980s. From this transformation in the way we eat came myriad "slow" movements that address other areas of life, such as travel, fashion, and art. The aim of the slow art movement is to break from the frenetic pace of modern life to simply enjoy works of art in an unhurried fashion. Tadao Ando's architecture foregrounds simple materials and straightforward form; thus, the Modern is an elegant vehicle in which to shift into this thoughtful way of approaching art. Led by a docent the third Friday of each month, Slow Art at the Modern features a 30-minute tour beginning at 5:30 pm. By attending to a single artwork, visitors are given the room necessary to think about the many dimensions of the piece before them. Slowing down never looked so good.

Third Fridays, 5:30-6 pm

Public Tours

Docents lead tours of highlights of the Modern's permanent collection and special exhibitions Tuesday through Sunday at 2 pm. A Spanish-language tour is available on the first Sunday of each month at 2 pm. A public architecture tour is offered on the first Saturday of each month at 11 am. These tours do not require prior arrangements and begin in the Museum lobby.

Products of the '80s: A Closer Look at Urban Theater

Thursdays, October 2-November 20

For Products of the '80s, distinguished local artists discuss individual works on view in the special exhibition Urban Theater: New York Art in the 1980s, exploring the themes, media, and overall context of the art. They then lead participants in specially designed studio projects using mixed and new media. This class spans eight weeks with two artists leading separate projects over the course of the mini semester. Space is limited, so enroll early.

All materials are provided. Register online at beginning August 20.
