FOCUS: Barry McGee

The FOCUS series is organized by the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth and Curator Andrea Karnes for the Director's Council, a group that supports acquisitions at the Museum. Each FOCUS exhibition presents work by a contemporary artist. FOCUS exhibitions are open to the public and are included in general Museum admission: $10 for adults; $4 for seniors (60+) and students with identification; free for children 12 and under; free for Modern members.

The final Director's Council FOCUS exhibition for the 2012-2013 season features the work of American artist Barry McGee. The exhibition will present all new work.

McGee rose to prominence in the early 1990s as part of the graffiti boom in San Francisco. Although he is primarily associated with street culture and the self-taught artists of the Mission School art movement, McGee was formally trained when he studied painting and printmaking at the San Francisco Art Institute. Drawing on such diverse influences as the Mexican Muralists, tramp art, surfer culture, graffiti from the 1970s and 1980s, and the beat poets, McGee's now widely recognizable imagery is as perceptive and poetic as it is graphic and dynamic. Often focusing on social dropouts and those who are marginalized, one of his most popular motifs is a sad-sack man depicted with a furrowed brow or grimace.

Working under the monikers Twist (Twister, Twisty, Twisto), Ray Fong, Lydia Fong, and others, McGee has used the tags to shift from one body of work to the next. The aliases offer the artist a certain freedom, as associations with him personally are filtered through their use. Inspired by the grit and density of city life, McGee has used graffiti to reach a large and indiscriminate audience that might not be accessible through the traditional institutions of art alone. Today, he is an influential and respected cult figure within the urban art scene who straddles both worlds; his drawings, paintings, sculptures, and installations have been exhibited at the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, and the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. Most recently, his work was the subject of a midcareer survey at the UC Berkeley Art Museum, which travels to the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston this April.

The Director's Council

The Director's Council was formed in 1985 and assists the Museum with acquisitions through the FOCUS series. The series features three solo exhibitions organized annually by Curator Andrea Karnes. Each exhibition opens with an exclusive cocktail reception for Council members, an opportunity to meet the featured artist and discuss his or her work. One work by each artist is chosen by the Museum to be part of the final selection for the Council's Purchase Meeting. This format provides members with an in-depth understanding of the Modern's acquisitions process and offers a spirited and popular series of events. The annual dues, $525, include all the benefits of a Family membership and invitations to exclusive Director's Council events.
