This six-week course offers an in-depth exploration of both fundamental and experimental approaches to life drawing while considering the special exhibition Jenny Saville: The Anatomy of Painting. Known for her large-scale, expressive depictions of the human form, Saville’s work provides a compelling point of reference as participants examine the possibilities of drawing the body directly from the nude model. The first class on December 3 will have a guided tour of the exhibition by Chief Curator Andrea Karnes.
Guided by Artist Eli Ruhala, the course blends presentations, thoughtful discussions, and hands-on activities that encourage participants to expand their understanding of the figure in art. Each session balances the development of technical skills with opportunities for creative experimentation, allowing students to refine traditional observational techniques while also embracing alternative processes and inventive approaches to composition. The course will invite students to reflect on the expressive and psychological dimensions of the body, considering how artists like Saville challenge and expand the tradition of figure painting and life drawing.
Designed for both beginners eager to build confidence and experienced artists seeking new ways to invigorate their practice, BIG DRAWING provides a supportive and challenging environment in which participants can discover greater versatility and depth in their approach to figure drawing.
