Kahlil Robert Irving

The artist Kahlil Robert Irving will present on his images and the function of referring to history and place in reflecting on his life in the post-industrial city of St. Louis. He was invited by this evening's guest curator, Glenn Ligon, who participated in Tuesday Evenings in 2012 in conjunction with his survey exhibition America. Irving will also discuss his work as it relates to Ligon’s.

With a BFA in Art History and Ceramics/Sculpture from Kansas City Art Institute and an MFA from Washington University in St. Louis, Irving received critical acclaim early in his career. His work is featured in Making Knowing: Craft in Art, 1950–2019, currently on view at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, and was in recent solo exhibitions at Callicoon Fine Arts in New York and Jenkins Johnson Gallery in San Francisco. He was selected to participate in the 2020 Great Rivers Biennial hosted by the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, where his solo exhibition At Dusk runs through February 21, 2021.

Each presenter has been invited by a past Tuesday Evenings at the Modern participant to give a presentation on a topic of their choice. The slate of talks offers an array of perspectives in a moment when people are anxious to connect, share knowledge, and learn from each other as we strive to improve and expand our understanding of ourselves and the world through the arts.

The Being There: Tuesday Evenings with the Modern format will allow for a live experience, with questions and discussion following each 30-minute presentation. Free registration will be available one week in advance.
