First Day with Michelle Mackey

For our first day with Michelle Mackey, we got to spend a lot of time in the galleries! We spoke about the idea of the sketchbook as an extension of thought and using the sketchbook for more than just drawing.

In the galleries, we completed four sketches focused on angles and light. The sketches were reminiscent of the Richard Diebenkorn paintings on view.

After completing the sketches, Michelle gave a demonstration about color theory and color mixing. Then we ventured back out into the galleries to find our color palettes. We focused on and documented even the slightest changes in color from one plane to the next. The color swatches we made in our sketchbooks will serve as guides or reminders when we are ready to make our final piece.
