New York-based artist Gary Simmons is known for his “erasure” technique, which he began using in the early 1990s. Initially creating semi-erased works with chalk on blackboards, the artist has evolved to works on paper, paint on canvas, and murals that mimic smudged chalk. The resulting blurred and ghostly images often refer to intersections of pop culture, race, and class.
Treasure Island, based on the novel by Robert Louis Stevenson
Robert Louis Stevenson’s story of murder, money, and mutiny is brought to life in a thrilling new stage adaptation by Bryony Lavery, broadcast live from the National Theatre.
It’s a dark, stormy night. The stars are out. Jim, the innkeeper’s granddaughter, opens the door to a terrifying stranger. At the old sailor’s feet sits a huge sea-chest, full of secrets. Jim invites him in, and her dangerous voyage begins.
Take a break from the Texas heat and join the Modern and Lone Star Film Society for Modern Kids—Summer Flicks! Share the art of the screen with your children as they watch stories unfold and ideas form in delightful and innovative films. The bonus for seeing these films at the Modern is the opportunity to visit the galleries before or after and experience the wonder of the art as stories unfold and ideas form in paintings, sculptures, installations, and videos throughout the museum.
Sunday, February 22; noon-4 pm
The Modern is open and free to the public the Monday of Spring Break! While the museum is normally closed on Mondays, on March 9 our doors are open, admission is waived, and children can begin celebrating with the special gallery program Spring Break Wonders.
