"Joyous, heartbreaking, and revelatory."—A.O. Scott, The New York Times
The backup singers behind some of the greatest musical legends finally take center stage. Morgan Neville's Academy Award-winning documentary celebrates the untold true story of the backup singers who shaped rock and roll history—Darlene Love, Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer, Judith Hill, and more. Featuring Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Mick Jagger, and Sting. Winner of the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature.
The Modern’s Exhibition Films series showcases the concept of “art in motion” through artist-created films, documentaries about artists, and films that explore themes related to our permanent collection and special exhibitions. At select screenings, attendees can engage in discussions and participate in Q&A sessions; all films are shown in the Museum’s auditorium. In conjunction with the exhibition Rashid Johnson: A Poem for Deep Thinkers, the Modern presents a film pairing that extends the exhibition’s exploration of Black identity, history, and cultural production beyond the gallery. The selected films span narrative and nonfiction forms yet share a focus on voice which echo key concepts in Johnson’s work—intellectual legacy, collective memory, resilience, and the tension between individual inner emotional lives and public persona.
The Fort Worth Film Club (FWFC) partnered in 2022 with the Reel House Foundation after the closing of Fort Worth’s lone art house theater, the Grand Berry Theater. Continuing what the Grand Berry started, FWFC's goal is to build a community in Fort Worth around a shared love of film. The Club hosts free monthly screenings, focusing on films with cultural and local importance. Screenings are open to the public and are followed by a moderated discussion.
