“8½ is the best film ever made about filmmaking.” —Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
Troubled Italian filmmaker Guido Anselmi (Marcello Mastroianni) struggles with creative stasis as he attempts to get a new movie off the ground. Overwhelmed by his work and personal life, the director retreats into his thoughts, which often focus on his past and present loves and frequently wander into fantastical territory. As he tries to sort out his many entanglements, romantic and otherwise, Guido finds his production becoming more and more autobiographical.
The “My Favorite Films” series features tales of romance, humor, suspense, satire, and heroism with films since 1945. These films may hold special memories for you—no matter how many times you see them, they continue to draw you in once more. While many of these films are available through streaming, it's always more fun to see them in the theatre.
This September, join us as we explore Italy through the camera lens. This collection of films captures the essence of Italian culture, style, and storytelling, spanning genres and eras. Each offers a unique glimpse into the heart of Italy, from its vibrant cities to its intricate family dynamics.
