“Small in its movements and thoughtful in its observations, All We Imagine as Light is quietly resonant.” —Kimberley Jones, The Austin Chronicle

Writer/director Payal Kapadia, who won the Grand Prize at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, explores and celebrates the light, the lives, and the textures of contemporary working-class Mumbai. Centering on two roommates who also work together in a city hospital—head nurse Prabha (Kani Kusruti) and recent hire Anu (Divya Prabha)—as well as their coworker and cook Parvaty (Chhaya Kadam), Kapadia’s film alights on moments of connection and heartache, hope, and disappointment to create a soulful study of the transformative power of friendship and sisterhood, in all their rich complexities.

The “My Favorite Films” series features tales of romance, humor, suspense, satire, and heroism with films since 1945. These films may hold special memories for you—no matter how many times you see them, they continue to draw you in once more. While many of these films are available through streaming, it's always more fun to see them in the theatre.

This March, let's leap into nostalgia with Magnolia at the Modern favorites and as we revive a beloved segment of our Women Directing Women film series from 2022. Experience the work of acclaimed women directors and powerhouse performances from leading actresses. Don't miss it!
