Based on the popular Broadway musical of the same name, Dreamgirls is inspired by the R&B music scene of the 1960s and 1970s. The story begins in 1962, when a Black girl group called the Dreamettes—Deena (Beyoncé Knowles), Effie (Jennifer Hudson), and Lorrell (Anika Noni Rose)—are spotted by ambitious car salesman-turned-manager Curtis Taylor Jr. (Jamie Foxx) at a Detroit talent show. Soon, Taylor offers them the chance of a lifetime: become backup singers for national star James Early (Eddie Murphy). The film traces its characters as they live out their dreams, discovering the high cost of fame in the process.

The Fort Worth Film Club (FWFC) partnered in 2022 with the Reel House Foundation after the closing of Fort Worth’s lone art house theater, the Grand Berry Theater. Continuing what the Grand Berry started, FWFC's goal is to build a community in Fort Worth around a shared love of film. The Club hosts free monthly screenings, focusing on films with cultural and local importance. Screenings are open to the public and are followed by a moderated discussion.
