El Mariachi

- Wednesday October 29, 2025 2:00 PM
Directed by Robert Rodriguez, 1992
R; Spanish with English subtitles; 82 minutes
“[Robert] Rodriguez goes for broke with a breakneck pace, swarms of bullets, cinematic tricks, and a tone as playful as it is knowing of genre conventions. The director's light touch is all his own; and this unpretentious offering delivers in all departments.” —Geoff Andrew, Time Out
El Mariachi (Carlos Gallardo) is a traveling guitar player who just wants to play music and carry on the family tradition. Looking for a job, he stops at a bar in a tiny town, where his simple, peaceful lifestyle is interrupted. Local hit men, expecting enemy assassin Azul (Reinol Martinez) to invade their town, believe that the visiting musician is the professional killer they are looking for. Unwittingly embroiled in vicious mob warfare, El Mariachi must shoot his way out of town if he is to survive.
The “My Favorite Films” series features tales of romance, humor, suspense, satire, and heroism with films since 1945. These films may hold special memories for you—no matter how many times you see them, they continue to draw you in once more. While many of these films are available through streaming, it's always more fun to see them in the theatre.
This October, embark on a journey through films where passion, vengeance, and heroism paint vivid stories. Experience a guitar-strumming hero and a masked swordsman, brought to life by Antonio Banderas and Carlos Gallardo.
