Documentary; 88 minutes
In Texas, the Krause List targets 850 books focused on race and LGBTQIA+ stories, and across the US sweeping book bans are growing at an unprecedented rate. As tensions escalate, librarians connect the dots between heated school and library board meetings nationwide, laying bare the underpinnings of extremism fueling these censorship efforts. Facing harassment, threats, and laws aimed at criminalizing their work, the librarians’ continue their rallying cry to protect the freedom to read. The Librarians offers a chilling, cautionary tale about the future of libraries and the perils of censorship.
A post-film discussion will be moderated by Fort Worth Film Club Executive Director Jason Wiseman, in conversation with Audrey Wilson-Youngblood, a Texas librarian featured in the film; Chris Tackett, a former Granbury ISD Trustee and Texas Freedom to Read Project advocate; and Laney Hawes, co-founder and co-director of the Texas Freedom to Read Project and a Keller ISD parent.
Tickets for this special screening are $10 and $7 for Modern members, available at the museum’s admission desk or online soon.
The Fort Worth Film Club (FWFC) partnered in 2022 with the Reel House Foundation after the closing of Fort Worth’s lone art house theater, the Grand Berry Theater. Continuing what the Grand Berry started, FWFC's goal is to build a community in Fort Worth around a shared love of film. The Club hosts free monthly screenings, focusing on films with cultural and local importance. Screenings are open to the public and are followed by a moderated discussion.
