A washed-up American actor (Bill Murray) experiences jet lag and culture shock while filming a whiskey commercial in Tokyo, but finds solace in his connection Charlotte, a married 20-something (Scarlett Johansson) whose successful photographer husband (Giovanni Ribisi) is in the city on an assignment. As the unlikely pair explores Tokyo, they begin to wonder if their sudden friendship might be growing into something more.
