A Silent Voice

Bullying has been a problem worldwide, but it is a significant problem in Japanese schools and has been the subject of hundreds of Japanese films and television shows. A Silent Voice (2016) is one of the most powerful anime films to deal with this subject. The film follows Shoya Ishida, a teen-aged boy who is haunted by his guilt for bullying and tormenting a deaf girl, Shoko Nishimiya, in elementary school. Now in high school, they cross paths again and he has a chance to make up for his misbehavior. But the course of redemption does not run straight as both of them must first come to terms with their own demons. A nominee for the 2017 Japanese Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film, this film was directed by Naoko Yamada and based on the manga series by Yoshitoki Oima.
