Justin Adian

Justin Adian’s work is as good as a vinyl top of a 1969 Dodge Charger. Richard Prince, Interview Magazine, January 7, 2015

Justin Adian, an artist living and working in Brooklyn and represented in the Modern’s permanent collection, is here to share ideas and works from his career. Adian was born in Fort Worth and received his BFA from the University of North Texas in 2000 before earning an MFA from Rutgers University in 2003 and going on to develop a significant international exhibition record. In a 2015 article for Interview Magazine, the artist Richard Prince, who collects Adian’s work, notes his ties to Texas: “Adian lives in Brooklyn, but his Texas upbringing grounds his art.” Prince goes on to explain that the artist credits “the landscape and attitude of Texas” as influencing his “unostentatious works.” In the same article, Adian is quoted as saying, “Within the Texas art community, there’s always been a good place for humor.”

For Tuesday Evenings at the Modern, Adian positions the Modern’s Sidewinder, 2019, within the context of a career that began with those early days at UNT and continues with the same fervor, intelligence, and humor today.
