Complimentary hot dogs and lemonade for kids at Café Modern on Monday! (11 am- 2 pm; while supplies last)
Take an ART Break with family programming at the Modern while your school-aged children are on Spring Break, March 17-21.
Slow down, stop, and learn a little bit more about some of your favorite works from the Modern’s permanent collection and special exhibitions, Alex Da Corte: The Whale and Feeling Color: Aubrey Williams and Frank Bowling. Each ART Break station includes a conversation with a community artist and Modern docent and a gallery project focusing on selected works in the galleries. Join your family and others in helping build collaborative works.
Even though you can't touch the art (!), we have fun designed for the whole family to enjoy together. Get your creative energy flowing as you spend time with the Modern's collection of paintings, photographs, sculpture, and video.
March 17 from 11 am–3 pm: ART Break – Family Studio
Artist Instructor SooMi Han is leading an image transfer activity in the Grand Lobby inspired by Alex Da Corte's use of appropriation throughout the special exhibition, Alex Da Corte: The Whale. Join us on Monday to make your own custom tote bag, adorned with heat transfer imagery, custom buttons, and personal marks. Tote bags are limited, but SooMi invites you to bring your own cotton-based bags and garments for this activity.
March 18, 19, and 20 from 11 am–3 pm: ART Break
Artist Instructors Sheryl Anaya, Ciara Elle Bryant, Jamison LeBlanc, and Lauren Walker
Artist Instructor Sheryl Anaya invites you to join her for her collage/assemblage activity referencing Alex Da Corte's 2017 artwork Haymaker. Personalize your own composition using an assortment of materials, including patterned papers, toys, and plastic.
Artist Instructor Ciara Elle Bryant invites you to join her for her stamp-making activity, which references the many reverse-glass paintings in Alex Da Corte: The Whale. Make your own custom stamps to color block compositions that will serve as base layers for your contour drawings.
Artist Instructor Jamison LeBlanc invites you to explore the painting methods used by Aubrey Williams in Feeling Color: Aubrey Williams and Frank Bowling. Jamison will guide you in making your own abstract compositions using a range of materials.
Artist Instructor Lauren Walker invites you to make "Colorscopes." Using an assortment of paper materials, Lauren will guide you in making personalized sightseeing tools that highlight the magic of color in Feeling Color: Aubrey Williams and Frank Bowling.
