I am always inspired by the elegant simplicity of structures in nature. . . . Man-made designs should emulate these naturally integrated systems. The individual components of building cannot be simply additive. They must be congruent, balanced, and harmonious. Necessarily, this means a balanced amount of material, the least amount of energy, and the maximum amount of utility. I love simple, integrated design. It is always beautiful. “Carol Ross Barney On the Design Lesson in an Elephant’s Skull,” Metropolis, December 6, 2021

Carol Ross Barney, FAIA, HASLA is lead juror for this year’s FWAIA Annual Design Award, for which the Modern and Fort Worth AIA again collaborate. Ross Barney founded Ross Barney Architects in 1981 and  has made significant contributions to the built environment, the profession, and architectural education. As an architect, urbanist, mentor, and educator, she has relentlessly advocated that excellent design is a right, not a privilege. Her body of work occupies a unique place within contemporary architecture, being composed of structures primarily in the public realm.

Honored with more than 200 major design awards and named a “Gamechanger” by Metropolis magazine in 2018, Ross Barney is clearly part of the evolving discourse of architecture’s role today. In 2021, she received the Contribution to Architecture Award from World Architecture News for their inaugural Female Frontier Awards and the Order of Lincoln, the State of Illinois’s highest honor for contributions to the betterment of humanity.
