Summary
The Retail Associate supports the Museum’s mission by providing an exceptional visitor experience within the Modern shop. This role is responsible for assisting customers, processing sales, maintaining merchandise displays, and ensuring smooth day-to-day store operations. The Retail Associate serves as an ambassador for the Museum, helping to create a welcoming and engaging environment for all visitors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Greet and assist visitors in a friendly, professional manner; provide product recommendations and information about the Museum and its exhibitions.
- Operate the point-of-sale (POS) system to process transactions accurately, including cash handling, credit card sales, returns, and exchanges.
- Maintain clean, organized, and visually appealing merchandise displays; restock inventory as needed.
- Support inventory management, tagging merchandise, conducting stock counts, and reporting discrepancies.
- Promote Museum membership, special events, and other offerings to guests.
- Handle visitor inquiries and resolve issues promptly or escalate to a supervisor when necessary.
- Follow all Museum and store policies, including security, safety, and loss prevention procedures.
- Assist with special projects, sales promotions, and store events as assigned.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
- Availability on weekends, with an average of 20 - 29 hours per week.
- Flexibility to work special events in the evening and additional hours during peak seasons.
- Recent customer service experience (minimum one year), including handling payment transactions.
- Previous experience in a museum, gallery, cultural institution, bookstore, gift shop, or specialty retail environment preferred.
- Basic computer skills and experience with point-of-sale systems.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills.
- Knowledge of, or willingness to learn about modern and contemporary art.
- Ability to learn and communicate product information effectively.
- Ability to stand for extended periods and lift 20 pounds or more.
- Bilingual skills are preferred but not required.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands
Work is primarily performed in the Museum Store and museum public spaces. The position involves frequent interaction with museum visitors, members, volunteers, and staff and may involve periods of high customer volume during weekends, holidays, special events, and exhibition openings.
This position requires the ability to stand and walk for extended periods and occasionally lift and carry boxes or merchandise weighing up to approximately 20 pounds. The employee may be required to bend, stoop, reach, and climb a step stool while performing normal store duties.
