“The grand architecture of Milan and the icy rhythms of composer John Adams set the tone for this elegant Italian drama about the suffocating power of family, wealth, and tradition.” —J.R. Jones, Chicago Reader

Two decades ago, Emma Recchi (Tilda Swinton) left Russia to live with her husband (Pippo Delbono) in Italy. Now a member of a powerful Milanese family, she is the respected mother of three, but feels unfulfilled. When her son becomes a partner in a restaurant with Antonio (Edoardo Gabbriellini), a talented chef, Emma’s senses kindle.

The “My Favorite Films” series features tales of romance, humor, suspense, satire, and heroism with films since 1945. These films may hold special memories for you—no matter how many times you see them, they continue to draw you in once more. While many of these films are available through streaming, it's always more fun to see them in the theatre.

This September, join us as we explore Italy through the camera lens. This collection of films captures the essence of Italian culture, style, and storytelling, spanning genres and eras. Each offers a unique glimpse into the heart of Italy, from its vibrant cities to its intricate family dynamics.

Make a day of it at the Modern and include extra time to visit the galleries. Enjoy lunch in Café Modern and then settle in for an afternoon screening, or plan for a coffee break afterwards with fellow film enthusiasts.

Screenings are at 2 pm most Wednesdays in the auditorium. Tickets are $5 (FREE for Modern members) and are available at the Museum’s admission desk or online here.
