2018 Cliburn Festival: The Music of Russia

a celebration of the 60th Anniversary of Van Cliburn’s historic International Tchaikovsky Competition victory

Sixty years ago, a 23-year-old Texan went to Moscow at the height of the Cold War and came back an American hero and an international icon. The impact of Van Cliburn’s victory at the First International Tchaikovsky Competition cannot be overstated; he disregarded boundaries and brought the world together through excellent music and his signature warmth.

The Iron Fist in the Velvet Glove

This exceptional assembly of musicians which includes long-time friends of the series, Artistic Director Gary Levinson and Felix Olschofka, violins, and Michael Klotz, viola. They will join together with Columbian-born cellist, Santiago Cañón-Valencia and Cliburn Competition finalist, Elisso Bolkvadze, pianist, in works by Beethoven and a piano quintet by César Franck.​

From Vienna to Brotherhood

The brothers Díaz, Roberto, viola, and Andrés, cello, will be joined by husband and wife, Gary Levinson, violin, and Baya Kakouberi, piano.  It is a great honor to have Roberto and Andrés Díaz return to this series.  These stellar musicians will perform works of Mozart, Schumann, and Brahms. Roberto and Andrés are members of the Díaz Trio.​

This concert includes Mozart's Duo for Violin and Viola in G Major.  This work offers the listener an opportunity to hear the viola on an equal footing with the violin.​

I am a Girl

Nominated for four Australian Academy Awards including Best Documentary and Best Director, this inspirational documentary paints a clear picture of the reality of what it means to be a girl in the 21st century — that you are more likely to be subjected to violence, disease, poverty and disadvantage than any other group on Earth. The film introduces five girls coming of age in the way their culture dictates, whose remarkable heart-warming stories are full of resilience, bravery and humor.

Sounds Modern Celebrates 10 Years!

The most up-to-the-minute and least predictable concert music series in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, Sounds Modern celebrates its tenth anniversary with an event on Saturday, December 16 at 2 pm in the Modern's auditorium. Concerts in the series explore the links between contemporary music and visual arts, connecting thematically to exhibitions at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (and other contemporary art venues).
