"Mr. Takahata's psychologically acute film, which was based on a manga, seems to grow in impact." Nicolas Rapold, New York Times. Directed by Isao Takahata and produced by Hayao Miyazaki, the animated Only Yesterday celebrates its twenty-fifth birthday with a major US theatrical release. An unmarried career woman takes her first trip outside of Tokyo and daydreams about her pre-adolescent self. As her vacation progresses, she has extended flashbacks about the frustrations and small pleasures of her childhood, and wonders if her stress-filled adult life is what her younger self really wanted.
