FOCUS! FOCUS! FOCUS! is a Saturday morning workshop for young art enthusiasts to gather virtually and discover new ideas for each FOCUS exhibition. A Modern educator uses real-time video-based instructions and demonstrations to explore each FOCUS artist’s ideas and artmaking techniques, such as painting, drawing, photography, collage, and small sculptures. Take advantage of the opportunity to share ideas with other like-minded young artists.
Virtual classroom space is limited to 10. Registration is required.

Drawing from the Collection for Children, LIVE

Children learn with local artists as they lead informal projects on Facebook LIVE.  Hands-on exercises relate to works you might remember from visiting the Modern's galleries or are introduced to here and can look forward to visiting in the future.  Projects are designed with household materials in mind.

Adults at all skill levels learn with local artists who lead informal activities in response to selected works from the Modern's permanent collection.  Investigate and respond to works of art from the Modern's galleries from the comfort of your own home.  This is a LIVE virtual event, and each session is uniquely designed so there is something new awaiting you- just tune in with a sketchbook and pencils.

Artist Andrea Tosten will lead the May 9 session.

Wael Shawky explores the ambiguities between history and myth in order to challenge history’s authority. His projects, which include film, sculpture, and drawing, also raise questions about the role of history—and the biases held by those writing it—in forming longstanding national identities.

Inequality for All

In the wake of the U.S. economic crisis, the widening gap between the rich and the poor has gained unprecedented public awareness. Our narrator and guide, UC Berkeley professor and noted economic policy expert Robert Reich, helps us understand how the extreme inequality we are now facing has roots in economic and policy changes that began over 30 years ago. Punctuated by moments that allow us to know Reich personally, we also see his unwavering passion to return our society to one in which the American dream is possible for everyone.
